little by little, and also in great leaps

this is the story of my south american adventure.

Colombia, not Columbia

I´m writing tonight from an internet cafe just off the Plaza Mayor (the main square) of a tiny Colombian town called Villa de Leyva. It was my first real day in South America...having spent yesterday in a haze and mostly in a hostel, I don´t think I´ll count it. Today, however, Bek and Priya and I hopped onto a bus and headed north from Bogota into much prettier surroundings.
Colombia is one of the greenest places I´ve ever seen. Only a few kilometers outside of the capital, we were already surrounded by lush farmland...cows and chickens and barefoot children and all. We spent four hours altogether on the bus. Bek and I were in the back, with the sixteen year-olds, and Priya was lucky enough to have snagged a seat up front, right next to two horrendously motion-sick Colombian women. In their defense, the road was pretty twisty, the bus lacking shocks, and the driver typically South American. (No respect for lanes.)
Tomorrow I will try to post some pictures of Villa de Leyva...it´s a beautiful colonial town with a huge central plaza, stone streets, and whitewashed buildings. Unfortunately our slow morning meant that by the time we arrived, got a room, and ate dinner it was getting dark. But we´ve read about hikes, fossils, and canyoning, so tomorrow should be fun.
