Villa de Leyva

So this is the main square in Villa de Leyva. Funny thing about this place...it seems like the very definition of a quiet, sleepy little town. But just you try to get some sleep...
Last night there was a fiesta going on outside our hostel, which was fine, until about five in the morning, when someone decided fireworks were in order. Now, I like fireworks. I really do. But it was five in the morning, and I swear these were not the backyard type of firecrackers people let off on their own in the States. They were bigger, brighter, and louder than the ones I saw in Asheville a mere four days ago on the Fourth.
Bek slept right through it, but it gave me nightmares for the rest of the night.
Today, however, we woke up early and went to the Saturday market. Here´s a picture of some veggies:

Then we decided to hike up outside of town to an archeological site we had read about in the LP...it was a beautiful walk, through a really amazing neighborhood full of crazy houses and then a stretch of farmland. When we got there, we were informed that the site was an ancient Muisca (indigenous tribe, totally wiped out by the Spanish) tribute to human sexuality and fertility. This is pretty obvious to any casual observer of the area. Not much else is known. (See previous note about state of health of said tribe.)
Tomorrow we are getting back on the bus and heading north to San Gil, a larger town and Colombia´s outdoor adventure capital. We´re thinking of whitewater rafting.
Love to you all - goodnight!

Nice pics. The veggies don't look like the ones in my garden! Thanks.
