An unfortunate turn of events.
I´m not sure where to start describing the events of the past week and a half.
At the moment, I´m sitting in an internet cafe in Quito, and I just got out of the hospital. Without going into the painful details (I don´t want to think about them) I´ll just say that when I said I was feeling better, I was apparantly being overly optimistic.
I got really sick again in Canoa last weekend, and on Monday, sure I had malaria, Will and I decided to brave the night bus to get to the hospital as soon as possible. We checked in first thing in the morning, and after days of tests, hospital gowns, more needles in my arms than I ever thought possible, and several frustrating incidents involving us not speaking nearly enough Spanish, I am now proud to say that I no longer have a fever and I can stand upright without falling over.
Unfortunately, however, we have decided to go home. I´ve been sick for so long, and it has been so stressful for both of us, that we just don´t have the energy to keep travelling right now. At least I don´t...it was a hard decision, and I´m sure that once we are back in the States I will be really sad about it, but right now it just seems like what I have to do. Ecuador will still be here, right?

Katymae, I am sorry to hear that you weren't doing so well. I know you will continue your adventures in the future, I will admit my heart jumped a little thinking about you coming back, but then realized that it would be near your parents, which will be goo. I am glad your doing well, but know we do miss you and maybe I can talk john into a trip over there soon. I will send pics of the boys soon, we are leaving for hawaii on monday and I will hopefully have some fun pics of that trip. Take care and hope to talk with you soon.

Hey Missy,
So sorry to hear that you have been so unwell. I think you are making the right decision to come home (so dont doubt it...its all about going with your gut feelings)...better to be safe than stranded in some random place only to realise that you need urgent medical care!! Ecuador will def be there and will be much more fun when you arent fighting Malaria and more!!
Thinking of you guys!
xxxxxxxxxx

Katy!
I finally found your blog spot! (I lost your email). I've been wondering how you've been doing. I'm so sorry you've been sick. When you come back to the US where do you plan to live? Daniel and Thomas are doing very well in Kindergarten. They actually like the after school care - Bandit- better. They start Spanish lessons next week. I'll make sure they see your fabulous pics. What an adventure!

Hey Katy!
I somehow came across this again as I was looking at my friendster account recently. We never seemed to get it together to hang out while you and I were both in the Bay Area....now I'm in Santa Cruz. Crazy thing is, I spent about 5 weeks in Ecuador in 2000 and ALSO got extremely ill, spent time in a hosptial in Otavalo, where no one could understand me and I could understand no one, and I had to share a hospital room (and one tiny bathroom) with 3 other sick people (very awful when your sickness is stomach-related!!!). I hope you are doing better.
In other news, I'm getting MARRIED! To one Abe Ojure, whom you might remember from GUILFORD! Wedding is this November. Then we are moving to Virginia. Very, very, VERY Excited.
Well, I hope your amoeba is leaving you alone these days. Let me know what neck of the woods you are in!
